See these stats on the biggest music streaming services in the world. The surprising fact is that YouTube is by far the biggest, even though it doesn’t have a paid subscription model like Spotify and Apple Music.

As the linked article notes: “Using a loophole in international copyright laws, YouTube pays much lower licensing fees to the music industry than services such as Spotify. To be eligible for such lowered rates, YouTube considers itself a hosting platform rather than a content distributing platform, a practice that has repeatedly been dismissed as unfair by record companies and competitors. YouTube often downplays its role as a music distributor, saying it is mostly a promotional platform for artists and record companies.”
